Network Rail released its Strategic Business Plan (2019 – 2024) for CP6 in February outlining plans that will address performance and reliability improvements over major new schemes. The business plan promises to make the railway more reliable - reducing delays by 15% and more affordable – reducing costs by 10%. There are ambitious plans to “usher in the digital railway” by

phasing out old signalling systems with new digital controls and signalling.

Safety is also a top priority to ensure passengers and staff travel and work in a safer environment on the railway. The new plan will help reduce the risk of a train accident by a further 10%, through better inspection techniques and better asset management. The application of digital technologies will also enhance safety through the provision of automatic train protection and traffic management on selected routes. Network Rail will also increase focus on security threats including cybersecurity.

Passengers will see the deployment of 7,000 new carriages on the railway network by 2021, an additional 6,400 new train services including more trains with more frequent rail service and improvement works to 178 stations across the country. The plan also promises jobs and housing growth, environmental benefits and the support of British technology and innovation.
