STEVIE

Stevie the robot was created by engineers from Trinity College Dublin. It is the first of its kind to be built in Ireland. Stevie’s job is to help people live independently. He’s been programmed to recognise what is normal and abnormal behaviour for an elderly person and to notify someone if something is out of the ordinary. He uses a camera, phone, and Wi-Fi to do this, and can turn lights and household appliances on and off. Stevie is also capable of reminding people to take their daily medication, as many elderly people suffer from forgetting to take it.

PEPPER

Pepper is a semi-humanoid robot manufactured by SoftBank Robotics designed with the ability to read emotions. Pepper is currently being used as a receptionist at several offices in the UK and are able to identify visitors with the use of facial recognition, send alerts for meeting organisers and arrange for drinks to be made. Pepper is meant to make people happy / enhance people’s lives, facilitate relationships, have fun and connect with people from the outside world.

ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) was a humanoid robot created by Honda in 2000 which has since been retired. ASIMO had the ability to recognise moving objects, sounds and faces and its surrounding environment which enabled it to interact with humans. The robot could detect the movements of multiple objects by using visual information captured by two camera "eyes" in its head and also determine distance and direction. This feature allowed ASIMO to follow or face a person when approached. ASIMO also responded to questions by nodding or providing a verbal answer in different languages and could recognize approximately 10 different faces and address them by name. It was seen as a pioneering robot in the robot world at its time.
