BRITAIN GOES WITHOUT COAL FOR TWO WEEKS!

Britain have managed to not use coal to generate electricity for two weeks – the longest period since the 1880’s.

During the two-week period, on average gas made up nearly 40% of Britain’s suppliers, nuclear 20%, wind 13% and other sources making up the rest.

The coal-free fortnight comes just two years after the National Grid first ran without coal power for 24 hours.

The government last year unveiled its plan to shut down all remaining coal plants by 2025. The latest landmark came less than a month after Britain’s first week without coal.

Coal has been used for electricity generation since 1882, when a plant opened in Holborn, London. However in 2018 fuel made up just 5% of Britain’s electricity generation, a big decline on the 40% in 2012.
