OFTO

The UK Government have set ambitious targets for the deployment of renewable energy over this decade. In the next year, the government expects 15 per cent of the UK’s total needs to be met from renewable energy sources, leading to around 30% of our electricity coming from renewables.

In order to achieve this substantial deployment of green energy, the government has established a policy framework to support investment in renewable generation. This regime is called the offshore transmission regulatory.

An OFTO is competitively appointed by Ofgem through a tender process, when awarded an OFTO license is given. This authorises the holder to participate in the transmission of electricity in respect of an offshore transmission system. The license sets out an offshore transmission owner’s rights and obligations as an offshore transmission asset owner and operator.

By bringing in the OFTO regime it has proven to be a successful way of connecting cleaner electricity generation to networks at a lower cost for consumers. It is also a boost for competition as it attracts new players to the market.
