WEST MIRA TO BECOME WORLD'S FIRST HYBRID OFFSHORE RIG

Germany’s Siemens will supply a battery-based energy storage solution to the west Mia semi-submersible and turn it into the world’s first hybrid offshore drilling rig.

West Mira will become the world’s first modern drilling rig to operate as a hybrid with a diesel-electric power plant using lithium-ion energy storage solution (ESS). The solution consists of four converter-battery systems for a total maximum power of six megawatts (MW).

The new funding will result in hundreds of people getting electricity for the first time through 40 new clean power projects which will be built in sub-Saharan Africa.

The new funding is also expected to bring in an additional £156 million of private finance into the renewable energy market by 2023. This will hope to provide 2.4 million people a year with new or improved access to clean energy.

WINDY WEATHER CARRIES BRITAIN TO RENEWABLE ENERGY RECORD

Storm Diana brought chaos to those across the UK, however the winds have helped Britain to reach a new renewable record. Output hit as high as 14.9GW, beating a previous record of 14.5GW. This enabled windfarms to supply a third of the UK’s electricity between 6pm & 6:30pm, which is a peak time for energy demand.
