No place like home
A
mericans move an average of 11 times during their lifetimes, according to the U.S. Census
Bureau. It’s no wonder that when we find a place that feels like home we latch on to it and
carry it around in our hearts.
For my colleague, Ben Smith, that place is Fort Wayne – home to MU’s newer campus and the focus of
our cover story on Page 8.
Ben remembers the Fort Wayne of his childhood as “the biggest small town in America” – a city with
city amenities but a place “where you knew your neighbors and your neighbors’ neighbors and your
neighbors’ neighbors’ neighbors.”
Today’s Fort Wayne is bigger, notes Ben, “with a booming downtown anchored by the nation’s
best minor-league ballpark, and an ever-expanding universe of shops and splendid restaurants and
wineries within easy driving distance. But it still has that small-town feel, a family kind of town with
lots of parks and the Rivergreenway and ethnic festivals and one of the nation’s best zoos. It’s still
an immensely livable place – which is why I moved back 32 years ago and have never thought about
leaving since.”
My parents latched on to Manchester in the late 1940s and carried it in their hearts. They met and
fell in love here and made their first home in a World War II surplus trailer. When I was a kid, our
family returned for Homecoming and I remember my mom’s eyes welling when she sang “By the
Kenapocomoco.” That song is a touchstone for generations of alumni like it was for Mom. It tells a
story about our school along the river, and a story on Page 20 explores our relationship to that river.
I don’t know where you’re reading this or if you’ve moved 11 times. But I hope you carry Manchester
in your heart and that, in some way, this magazine takes you home.
