MU | N o t e s In Memoriam Katherine Tinsley, associate professor emerita Katherine Tinsley, 59, associate professor emerita of history, died June 5 of injuries suffered in a traffic accident. She retired in May after teaching American history at Manchester for 26 years. She trained future social studies teachers and worked tirelessly to improve student writing, scheduling one-on- one meetings with nearly every student. For many years, she and her husband, Matt Hendryx, who also retired this year from MU, mentored international students, taking them on trips in the region so that they could learn more about our culture. She shared with many her love of food, theater, art and rigorous scholarship. Dr. Tinsley earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and a master’s from University College in London. She completed a Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her parents, a sister and a brother. Sue Upshaw, pharmacy student Sue Upshaw, a third-year pharmacy student, died in a traffic accident on Sept. 16, 2017, in Fort Wayne. She was born Jan. 4, 1981, in Phoenix, Ariz., and had earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Arizona State University. She is survived by her spouse, Releen Upshaw; her father, Calvin Upshaw; brothers Taylor Upshaw and Jesse 36 | Ballesteros; paternal grandmother Marian Upshaw; and maternal grandparents, Jesus Ernesto and Maria Socorro Ballesteros. She was preceded in death by her mother, Maria Ballesteros. Her family and friends remember her as kind, funny and smart and, most of all, loved by everyone who knew her.
