From the WBKE studio
T
welve alumni responded to our query about these mystery photos.
Drawing from their recollections, this broadcast probably took
place in 1970-71 in the WBKE-FM studio on the top floor of the
Communications Building. Faculty members Tim Rieman and Ken
Brown (backs to camera) are with students (from left) Dan Moody
’72, Dianne Petry Wion ‘74, Kathy Goering Reid ’73 and Robert Bucher ’73, and
most likely discussing the Vietnam War, nonviolence and Church of the Brethren
nonresistance. Operating the control room are Philip Snider ’71 (seated) and Gary
Arnold ’72, program director. The student seated has not been identified. Also in this
area was Manchester’s carrier current AM station, which reminded Gary Morr ’78 of
a story told by Sam Davis, a faculty member at the time.
The cable from the AM station to Schwalm Hall once shorted out on the rails of the
railroad that cut through campus, explained Morr. The rails acted as a giant antenna.
As a carrier current station, the AM station was transmitted through electrical wiring
and available only in campus buildings. Since it wasn’t intended for the general public,
an FCC license was not required in those days. No one knew this was happening
until a woman from Chicago wrote to tell Manchester how much she loved listening
to the station! Manchester shut it down until the cause of the problem was discovered
and corrected.
