Designer: Brenda Carver M The future is ours y parents were devoted newspaper readers. Our South Bend Tribune subscription was as staple to our diet as milk and bread and a priority in the family budget. That’s why I still have the letter, yellowed with age and written on an IBM Selectric typewriter. The letter offered me a summer internship at The Tribune in 1980 for the princely sum of $140 a week. I would work in a newsroom with journalists whose prose I had devoured daily for as long as I could read, and my byline would be next to theirs. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. That internship paved the way to my eventual career at The Tribune’s competitor down the road in Elkhart. I lived and worked in a region where I had deep roots and an emotional investment in its vitality and future. Sure, it paid the bills. But, in my own small way, I also was making a difference to the people and place I loved most. These days Manchester students are making a difference by helping to drive the economic engine of northeast Indiana. Some are learning about development, tax incentives, business plans and marketing strategies, while others are expanding the capacity of pharmacies and health care organizations. Whatever their role, they give back with solid skills, fresh ideas, optimism and energy. MU students make connections and build relationships with northeast Indiana employers and communities. They discover amenities and career opportunities in their own backyard. And, in turn, employers discover the distinctive qualities that Manchester graduates bring to the workplace. Our faculty, administrators and alumni are sharing their talents, too, in regional industries and economic development efforts that often push the boundaries of conventional thinking. I invite you to read our story on Page 19. At Manchester University, we are fully engaged in northeast Indiana’s future. It is our future too.
