Memorial Day

Memorial Day was once known as “Decoration Day” in the earlier stages of its development as a national holiday. First declared on May 5, 1862, the geographical origin of Memorial Day may not be clear due to the multiple sources claiming they were responsible for its existence. Regardless of the many claims of the location of its origin, the purpose of the holiday remains the same. Memorial Day was founded as a day to honor and celebrate those who lost their lives fighting for our country.

Not so fun fact: According to Washington Post Database of U.S. Service-Member Casualties, we have lost almost 2 million American troops on the battlefield since 1775 with 1,500,000 more wounded and approximately 40,000 MIA. This does not include indirect deaths amongst our military personnel including sickness and disease, accidental death and suicide. It also doesn’t include the death toll for unofficial and undocumented wars. All together, the body count would be somewhere around 82 million.

Reflecting on Memorial Day and its true meaning, don’t forget about those who gave their lives so that we may have a better one. And as you break bread with your loved ones and attend the parades and celebrations, remember why we celebrate.

May this be a tribute, honoring those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. We salute you. And to their families, friends, loved ones and peers, may God be with you.
