Skiing and Skeleton showing the diversity
and range that’s becoming the Games.
Social Media Analytics
Given the interests that the Games
generated across media – both traditional
and social, there was bound to be unique
interest from an African perspective. There
was increased use of social media by the
athletes to not only create awareness about
their daily activities, but to crowdfund and
secure monies for training and travels to
the Games.
A report from the CampsBay Media and
social media analytics company Hookit
was able to analyze the athletes’ social
media pages and engagements within the
two weeks of the Games (thanks to the
CampsBay team led by Lolade Adewuyi)
– I can share snippets of it here.
From a total of 8 countries – Eritrea,
Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco,
Nigeria, South Africa and Togo, there was
an overall representation of 10 athletes (
Nigeria with 3 due to the bobsleigh team
while the rest had single athletes in their
disciplines). They were able to produce 771
posts that generated 502,501 interactions
over the 2 weeks. Combined data from
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram * during
the Games, put the top 5 athletes with
most followers as shown in the table:
None of the athletes made use of
YouTube within the said period. Missed
