Develop emotional intelligence, that’s,
being aware of yourself and other
people’s emotions and managing yourself
accordingly. Being considerate of others,
while challenging them and driving for
results is a rare combination that will mark
you as someone with the rare combination
of head and heart, in high demand in the
21st Century organization.
Mind your Manners
An often ignored part of interpersonal
skills is good manners, which involves
paying attention to the little things,
such as avoiding raising your voice even
when angry, respecting personal space
and boundaries, following etiquette rules,
returning things you borrow, cleaning up
after yourself, communicating in a timely
courteous manner and apologizing for
wrongs done and saying excuse me, please
and thank you.
We all like it when people are good to
us. Good manners, practiced genuinely
besides demonstrating care and respect
also communicates poise and polish, thus
enhancing your personal brand.
Make an Action Plan
Improving your brand must be intentional,
rather than accidental. It also needs to be
done from a place of authenticity rather
than manipulation. What is great about
your personal brand, and what needs to
change?
Identify three to five things you will
change. Write them down and post them
in two to three places where you will see
them regularly to keep yourself focused
and motivated. Work on your actions
daily. The more you succeed, the more you
will be motivated to keep working on your
actions.
This will help you quickly improve your
positioning in the eyes of those you
interact with – and reap the associated
benefits of enhanced standing and
increased opportunities. You will like
yourself better and be positioned to access
more opportunities.
Build your brand intentionally. Keep
doing audits at least once a year, and
identify new areas to work on to further
enhance your brand. Here’s to a new you
in 2018.
