Some hospitals, corporates, government institutions and universities of course had a head start over others when it comes to biometrics but it is now becoming a key selling point in new mobile devices, laptops and vehicles hitting the market, the preference being fingerprint recognition and iris scanners. The most notable application of biometrics which I have found to be the most interesting is in schools. Gone are the days when teachers took roll calls with a pen and register, today schools have begun adopting biometric technology. In Mvita Constituency for instance a teacher stands at the door of the classroom with an iris camera. Each students’ iris picture is linked to their personal file. Once captured, the system sends a text message to the parent notifying them that their child has arrived in class. Photo Courtesy of BioSIM Co. Ltd truancy which is a menace in the coastal region. Amazing! Isn’t it? This technology has been adopted in various schools in Mombasa, Meru and Laikipia Counties. The same is done in the evening as the pupil leaves school. In the event a pupil does not show up in school, after roll call, within minutes the system detects that his/her iris picture has not been captured on that day and automatically sends a text message alerting the parent that the child did not show up in school. The application of biometrics is limitless, therefore as marketers it is important to think outside the box as we identify new opportunities for such technologies in Kenya. The fact that they offer extra security features is obvious so we need to focus on how relevant these security features are to the needs of the client and demonstrate that it is worth an investment from them. The constituency is piloting this technology as a way of dealing with Most importantly, taking IEBC and the KIEMS fiasco as an example, it is important to educate the client on every detail about the product to enable them defend it should the need arise. All in all, Kenya is proving once more that we are the experts at adopting technology by finding innovative ways of utilization.
