ON THE BAD-BOY EFFECT

As luck would have it the new girl that had joined the school and everyone was smitten with was called Achieng , which convinced Ochieng that it was not just a mere coincidence that they shared a name but that providence has provided his soul mate .

Ochieng had already imagined how an entourage of his family members led by his ever eloquent uncle would visit the girl ’ s family to ask for her to be his life-time partner and even where they would live and how many children she would bear him .
He even started composing a wedding song and on several occasions was woken from his daytime reveries by teachers who did not realize that he had more important matters of the heart to deal with and to add new stanzas to his ode to Achieng .
The only problem was that the term had nearly elapsed and Ochieng had not found the courage to even greet her let alone dare to walk anywhere near her . The object of his adolescent longing was up to then blissfully unaware of his noble intentions towards her .
The holidays came and Ochieng was not enjoying the holidays as he usually did and could hardly wait for the new term to begin when he had vowed to throw caution to the wind and let her know how he felt and his grand plan for their future together .
Then that fateful visit to the shops , where teenagers went to meet and hang out , happened . Ochieng saw her coyly smiling and sitting too close to the bad-boy of the school , the one who always got into trouble and had been suspended twice in his short school career .
By the time the term began it was abundantly clear to anyone that cared to notice that the bad boy and the stunning Achieng were an item . Ochieng vowed never to ever waste his time again on fickle lasses who had no discernment whatsoever .
Unfortunately Ochieng was to later confront this fascination with the bad boys on a larger world stage and try to figure out what was so attractive to people about bad boys and why they attract adoration and following when their only promise is disaster in waiting .

Such was the impact of this nubile goddess that there seemed to be nothing else that boys were discussing during their spare time except her . Ochieng was unable to join in the conversations as the mere mention of her name made his heart pulsate and become tongue tied .
The sky dropped for Ochieng as he took in the scene . His beloved in the company of the ne ’ er-do- well was not in his script . He could not comprehend what she could possibly see in that perennial loser who was a guarantee to mess up her life .
