Many people neglect their health in pursuit of success. You should not be one of them. Your health is the door to stretching your limits and finding maximum satisfaction, success and fulfillment in your life. To be healthy means to be strong not only physically, but also mentally and spiritually. If you are in good health, you have an added advantage in working towards your goals with focus, perseverance, extra energy and enthusiasm. It will save you money, energy and peace of mind at the same time. Decision Making and Willpower Every decision you have to make costs willpower, and decisions where you have to suppress an appealing option for a less appealing one (e.g. exercise instead of watch TV ) require a lot of willpower. There are various tricks to keep your behaviour in line: Keep your state high. If you’re hungry, exhausted, or utterly deprived of fun, your willpower will collapse. Ensure you take consistently good care of yourself. Attempt the most important tasks first. This makes other tasks more difficult, but makes your top task more likely. The gardener must make the difficult decision to prune the good buds, in order to redirect the flow of nutrients to the best buds. This is not an easy task for a gardener that loves every rose, but it is necessary for the buds to bloom to their fullest potential. Don’t keep yourself in a constant state of willpower depletion. Weight-lifting is a great way to build muscle. But you wouldn’t spend hours daily lifting weights with no recovery time. The same holds for willpower. While wisely exercising self-control is a great way to build willpower, never giving yourself a break is a good way to deplete your resolve. Our lives are very similar to this rose bush. They are often filled with so many good things; so many opportunities, commitments, endeavors, and relationships that we are overwhelmed. Our resources are stretched, and nothing, or no one, is getting our full attention. In most areas we are surviving, not thriving. What would happen if we were to prune back some of the good for the sake of the best?
