TIPS FOR THE RETICENT DURING NETWORKING EVENTS

Meeting new people and making friends is daunting for all of us but it ’ s especially difficult for those who have more introverted personalities than extroverted . The terms introspective , reclusive , shy , reserved , amongst others generally capture the traits of these .

I would like to focus on the word reticent which according to Merriam Webster is an inclination to be silent or un-communicative in speech . In her book ‘ Quiet ’, Susan Cain explains that introverts are more deliberate and careful in their speech and conduct and as such take more time soaking their environment and cues given before they act . This obviously means that they are much less voluble .
Networking events present a wonderful opportunity to meet with people especially professionals in fields that are of interest to you . I believe ideally every professional should attend at least 3 networking events every year .
However , if you ’ re the type of person who ’ d rather be at home with a book or watching a movie then it might

Research before the event
It ’ s really useful to do homework on the event , including things like venue , theme , dress code , time , etc . to boost your confidence as you go in . Especially on the theme of the event , you ’ ll be able to engage in richer conversations with others . In addition , make sure to keep abreast with current news , at least for the week or two before the event , remain updated with happenings in your country and around the world . Remember also to keep up with the latest in your field e . g . a doctor would need to be updated with the latest in the field of medicine .
Have clear goals in mind
This includes what impressions and information you want to leave behind about yourself and / or the organization you work for , the number of people you want to meet and the niche fields they serve in . In the case of a doctor for example , a
