I fear that Africa will never be elevated ; rather , it ’ ll stay on the downward spiral , regressing , disproportionately to its population growth . Those before us wrestled and liberated the continent from the foreign powers that invaded , enslaved and colonised us ; in the hope of a better Africa , but we ’ re our own worst enemies , now trying to salvage the continent from the creed of a few unrighteous amongst us .
If the dead could speak , our predecessors would probably be questioning their wisdom in rescuing Africa from the foreign invaders . They succeeded and achieved , for our benefit but alas , we have now all but thrown their painstaking achievements in the gutters of corruption , dishonesty , profligacy , apathy , impunity and lawlessness .
When African leaders , whether elected or appointed , convert national wealth and legacy assets into their private estates and personal wealth – commanding and demanding reverence and respect thereby , they only swallow fire into their bellies ; wronging their own souls from
injustices and injuries caused to the rest of society .
The late Dr . Eunice Songa-Saraceno , endowed with the courage to speak up against the ravaging inequities and injustices which are inhibiting growth in her beloved nation of Kenya and continent-wide , should not die in vain ( RIP ). Her message , in my opinion is meant well and should serve as a timely reminder for those that will reflect , at this critical point in our continental development , irrespective of your position on the social ladder .
Coincidentally , the baton of leadership at the AU , the apex inter-governmental organisation on the continent , has only recently passed on to a new occupant of this august office . Africans at large , and the youth in particular , will expect a true change in the management of our continental affairs ; to deliver the wider inclusive beneficial dividends of a bold , courageous , righteous and responsive leadership , which will derive the change that the late Dr . Songa and several other patriotic Africans are calling for .
Our collective national and continental heroes left us not only an amiable inheritance but a duty of care towards the latter generations . So , this isn ’ t about us , but about the legacy we are preparing to leave to our successors .
A crucial reminder for us all ; to lead well or visit the cemeteries ; there abound for the glaring eyes examples of generations past ; irrespective of their class , alone and bare they came , so too was their return to the Lord and Creator , to Whom belongs the final inheritance .
