Rugby has managed to whiter this storm though professionalizing the national leagues would be most ideal . The current transition of the national 7s team is a good example of the need to fully professionalize the sport .
Of course corporate firms and investors would play a huge role in such developments of ensuring sports teams have their own grounds , are able to develop into brands and manage to employ personnel and sports teams on a full time basis .
In another fledgling sport – basketball , the US Embassy announced plans to assist in ensuring local players getting assisted to participate in leagues that would eventually assist them play in the National Basketball Association – basketball ’ s most lucrative league . The programme known as Junior NBA is hoped to connect Kenyan youth with one of the world ’ s premiere sports properties . Such initiatives though welcome are supposed to be the brainchild of the game ’ s custodians Kenya Basketball Federation .
Investment in physical infrastructure of sporting facilities is still a red herring in this part of the world – even after the sitting Government promised 5 international standard stadia by the end of their term in 2017 . If miraculously this does happen in the next 12 months , it will only be to the good of growth of sport in the country .
The growth of sports in Kenya is potentially destined for bigger things in 2017 as our sports personalities keep shining the spotlight on the country ’ s potential . Hoping being an election year doesn ’ t affect the development of sport , we in the sports business look into the New Year with a spring and spritz in our steps !
