Twenty-seven high schoolers participated in the Sustainable Communities Project - 2018 Leadership Camp. The camp was a three-day, two-night training that offered learn-by-doing leadership development experiences. In route to Forest Glen Camp students toured Gibbs Ranch, Sam Houston State University and participated in four workshops conducted by the Department of Agricultural & Engineering Technology. Students learned about selecting fertilizers, livestock reproductive systems, fecal floats, and water aquifers.

At Forest Glen, students engaged in team-building activities to enhance communication and problem-solving skills; worked in groups to create presentations on critical issues affecting urban agriculture and had lots of fun with outdoor recreational activities such as canoeing, swimming, zip-line, and fishing. Outreach Coordinator Joanie King from the Texas A&M University Department of Entomology provided a workshop on the importance of insect existence, habitats, and species.

Cooperative Extension Agent for Community Economic Development, Nate Peterson, provided students with a workshop of youth entrepreneurship challenging students to brainstorm agricultural business ideas and pitch their businesses to the group. Teens were encouraged to use their acquired skills to lead their 4-H clubs within their schools and continue to participate in all Sustainable Communities Project activities.
