AGRICULTURE & NATURAL RESOURCES

Harris County Agent Kimberly Perry, Prairie View A&M University - Cooperative Extension Program Agriculture & Natural Resources participated in a wonderful collaboration with the Greater Mission Bend Area Council, also known as (GMBAC). The Plant Swap is an annual event where residents from Harris County are able to exchange many plants, seeds, pots or gardening decor with one another at no charge.

Each participant was assigned a table or an area to display plants that they brought to exchange. Participants simply walk around to different tables and when they see a plant they would like to have they ask the owner/ grower of that items if they would like to exchange one for their item. For participants who could use an extra hand unloading or loading plants into their vehicles, students from the National Honor Society from Kerr High School volunteered to help.

150 participants attended this free event. The Plant Swap helps many residents of Harris County who lost their vegetation due to hurricane Harvey as well as plant enthusiasts. During this event Kim Perry provided educational materials to the public about growing fruits and vegetables within Harris County and answered many questions.

Participants walked away with many free plants, gifts, prizes and educational materials about growing fruits and vegetables. Within the educational materials that were provided was a detailed list of all the fruits and vegetables that can be grown within Harris County. They also received a planting guide listing which months to plant their crops.
