Horticulture Agents Skip Richter and Paul Winski conducted the Master Gardener Volunteer Training Course. The Master Gardener Volunteer Course is an annual course which trains a selected group of residents in the details of horticulture including botany, plant pathology, entomology, soils, vegetables, fruit, turfgrass, pesticide safety, organic gardening, and water conservation. Participants receive over 70 hours of instruction in a 12 week course by a variety of specialists from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Volunteers trained in this program serve in AgriLife Extension programs across Harris County in a variety of ways including answering phone questions, serving in the speakers bureau, conducting educational kiosks at public events, assisting the agents with research projects, and conducting educational events on gardening and landscaping. Master Gardener volunteers contribute over 10,000 hours of volunteer time each year greatly expanding AgriLife Extension’s capacity to serve county residents with scientifically based horticulture education and assistance.
