A Lunch & Learn program on “Tips for First-time Homebuyers” was conducted for the Harris County Extension office, Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) Northwest Campus and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Educational Program (EFNEP) office.

Community Economic Development Extension Agent Nate Peterson, Cooperative Extension Program-PVAMU, provided insights from The Homeownership Overview Program. This program provides understanding on the various federal loans, down payment assistance, tax credits and repair programs available for current homeowners and aspiring homeowners. The program includes handouts, resources for homeownership, budget tools and information on Veteran’s Exemptions and USDA housing programs.

Participants were provided information and tips on the various entities and resources available for their real-estate needs including:

• The Mortgage Credit Certificate Program

• The Mortgage Credit Certificate Program

• Down Payment Assistance from both

Harris County & City of Houston

• Individual Development Accounts (IDA) for

Housing

• USDA Housing Loan Programs (Eligibility

Maps)

• Home Affordability Calculator

Participants were given folders with additional resources. Participants were engaged and asked numerous questions about the real estate purchasing process including income requirements and affordability. Many of the participants actually owned a home, but were unaware of various programs including the home repair programs, mortgage credit certificate and down payment assistance programs before purchasing their homes.

Each person was encouraged to enroll in a IDA account with our partner Community Capital and attend Avenue’s HUD-certified Homeownership Certification Class.
