AN ELEMENTARY BAND CENSUS FOR THE STATE OF
MAINE (2017)

While I have changed hats within MMEA from Band VP to President Elect, most of what
I do in my job revolves around instrumental music education. Having noticed trends in
our own K-12 Music enrollment, our school district recently started an Elementary Band
Task Force, and I found myself in need of information about how other schools
approached these formative elementary music years. I had significant anecdotal
evidence after talking to teachers from around the state, but I needed concrete data.
Hopefully the following information will be useful to educators around the state as we
continue to look to the future of music education in Maine.
