Sam Clemmett

On 5 December, acting star and alumni, Sam

Clemmett returned to Thorpe to give an

inspiring talk to our students.

Year 13 Drama students, Ellie Cranswick

and Lauren Hughes, tell us how it went.

Sam Clemmett came to visit the Drama department, giving

a Q&A session on his experience within theatre and acting as

a professional career.

He began by telling us all about how he originally got into the industry. This was via his attendance at the Garage in Norwich, followed by his successful audition with the National Youth Theatre. He also mentioned how he applied to several drama schools however was unfortunately unsuccessful. It was therefore interesting to hear about the other route he took into what is now his profession; learning on the job, and observing the techniques of professionals in order to shape his still developing style.

He talked us through his daily schedule whilst he was working on the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which is set to air on Broadway in New York next year. For example, he described the rehearsal process, the vocal and movement warm ups and fitness regime the Potter cast were required to do. This was eye-opening as I believe many students were unaware of the element of fitness that goes into being physically prepared for a performance. His description of his own techniques for developing characterisation could also be useful to employ when working on pieces of theatre within the classroom.
