Our ‘’mountains’’ : the « Terrils » In The twentieth century, mines were the principal business for the Nord Pas De Calais. In this mining area, there are 340 dumps identified. Fifty-one of these, and other elements of mining were inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO. This is an artificial hill built by accumulation of mine waste, it is the mass of earth and stone that were removed from mines. A heap can be conical, and be an important feature of the landscape, or flat to blend in completely, especially if the vegetation is installed on it.
