Generally speaking, pike are instinctive attackers and can be “forced” into action even when they are not hungry, but, in any case, they need to be active. If one of our big, noisy flies is moved in their surroundings, creating just the right amount of disturbance, the pike will for sure follow the fly, and, if the fly is well moved and if we are lucky enough, the irritated pike will attack the fly ! If casting big heavy flies, tight loops are not needed, on the contrary, big wide loops will allow to fish and cast safer. Especially in those places where the fishing pressure in quiet high, tactics are requires, for instance, retrieve speed is very important. Retrieve rates should be varied depending on water temperature and season; in the early season, during the coldest months, retrieve speed should be reduced quiet a lot, in this case retrieve can be slowed down till a steady figure of eight retrieve; later, when the water has warmed up, fast, long strip often work better. In any case, a good tip is to vary the retrieve rate until the first attack arrives ! Report Confluenze 99
