Magazine Confluenze | fly fishing experience Number 8 Year 2 | Page 60
Not always every fly will work, so if after some
casts you do not have results, it is advisable to
change to a completely different pattern. For instance, in case we started with a clear fly, we
shall change to a dark one, and again if fish do
not appreciate our offer we shall use a bright
and gaudy fly.
Fly size has a limited importance, since we usually employ flies tied on # 2 or 1/0 hooks. To me,
finding the right colour blend for the fly plays a
more important role. Also the hour and the
brightness of the day may affect the colours.
In days with limited sunlight, bright flies with

clear or gaudy colours (chartreuse, yellow, orange, white) will work best, on the contrary in
bright and sunny days, darker and less brilliant
colours (olive, purple, black, blue, etc) will have
to be preferred. When I say bright flies I mean
flies having sparkling fibers such as flashabou,
kristal flash, fishabu, angelfish and the like.
Tarpon feed on small fish but also on crustaceans, such as crabs and crayfish, and consequently it will be safer to have with us some
imitations of them, just in case. A reliable crayfish imitation tied with orange and tan rabbit hair
can indeed solve difficult days.
