Dean Svoboda

Founder and Executive Director of AAFS

Dean has spent the last 14 years working with children, youth and adults with Autism all over the city.

AAFS was founded by Dean and a small group of parents that saw a gap in service in the ASD Social/Recreation world. They noticed that ASD kids largest deficit was in the social/Recreation world yet there were no programs available that focused on social/recreational development.

Dean saw too many kids struggling through a day of school, going to Speech Therapy after school and more therapies and doctors throughout the week. A simple question was asked, "When do they get to be kids and just enjoy life and is anybody teaching them to enjoy life?"

Dean has completed the prestigious Executive Directions Program and continues his lifetime of learning at conferences/ seminars and classes whenever available. Dean has lots of awards he'll try and not brag on but apart from being a loyal, honest, caring (and quite crazy) guy Dean is also a husband (Michelle) and dad (Max).

He's made a difference in the lives of young people who are now staff at AAFS not just because he is good at what he does, but, because he became and has stayed a friend to folks.

Without Dean's encouragement and support there would be no MagAAFSzine........

THANK YOU DEAN!

About AAFS

AAFS provides respite care in a social and recreational environment for children, youth and adults on the spectrum of Autism; this includes, but is not limited to, Autism, Aspergers, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Non-Verbal Learning Disorder.

AAFS is both dreamt-up and made reality by the youth themselves.

We envision and facilitate the implementation of programming where our youth can choose their own adventures and have a hand in every intricate detail of each activity regardless of how difficult it is to conceptualize or organize.

We work with our youth, for them.

Our mission is friendship,

and it was written entirely by two AAFS Members:

Friendship means someone who you can trust and/or someone who heals you. You cannot simply ask to be friends, or if the other person is your friend, it is much more advanced than a yes or no answer, and friendship builds up over time.

Friendship is "People getting to know other people and being interested in one another. Liking them for who they are, and not judging them. Not judging the book by its cover."
