ASTM Standard F1979-10 currently defines a paintball as;–
“paintball, n—spherical ball, with a diameter and weight as defined in Table 1, comprised of a shell and a fill, and designed to be expelled from a paintball marker. “
The wording of the ASTM
standard automatically
disqualifies FSR as a paintball
because it is not spherical.
The goal of this testing is to
have non-spherical projectiles
be further defined, for purposes
of clarity, to be limited to a shape
defined as an “elliptical ogive”
which describes a form that has a rounded nose that is not pointed.
Note: All equipment and materials used in this test were privately purchased and/or leased by the three test team members. There has been no corporate sponsorship by any paint manufacturer, distributer or reseller.
Test Objectives
Objective:
1. When comparing paint types of similar mass and velocity, does a First Strike paint projectile impact the target with a similar or different force when compared to spherical paint?
2. Does the “base” or “skirt” of the FSR modify the impact force?
3. Based on measured impact forces, determine if a recommendation could be made to change the definition of a paintball to include non-spherical projectiles.
