are deceased, and Jamie lives and operates her own public rela- tions firm in Ohio. Hissom has taught primarily English, history, health and physical education in schools of various levels in Kentucky and Ohio during her career, but the bulk of her work was spent at Madison Central High School, where she taught health and physical education for 21 years prior to her retirement. In the hospital gift shop, she can often be seen behind the counter, but she and the other volunteers do “pretty much any- thing that needs to be done” in the shop, she said. Besides her work in the gift shop, Hissom volunteers her talents at her church, First Presbyterian in Richmond, most recently setting up Lenten luncheons. She is also a long-time member of Alpha Delta Kappa, a teacher’s sorority that awards a $1,000 annual scholarship to a woman who is planning to become a teacher. She also loves playing bridge and reading and still cooks ev- ery day. “I think if I quit being active, I’d just keel over,” she said. Another reason she loves working in the hospital gift shop is that the hospital makes her and other volunteers feel warm and welcome. “They make us feel like we’re very much part of the staff,” she said, explaining that there are two luncheons for the volunteers each year, usually at Boone Tavern, and the volunteers attend the annual employee banquet, and receive gifts as part of all three events. At Thanksgiving, they receive a coupon for the purchase of a turkey. The volunteers also get a complimentary meal if their shift covers a mealtime hour. Eddie & Nancy Wray We’re Your Allergy Experts!
