VICKY Logan What does the term “influencer” mean to you? Influencers bridge the gap between brands and their consumers. An influencer can communicate the voice of the average consumer from personal experience on a larger scale. Not only does that allow our voices to be heard by big brands and corporations but we can help them become more tangible and in tune with their consumers. Influencers are the new advertisement! With the various channels of social media we are able to share our lifestyle in a down to earth environment that people can relate to. But more importantly, there’s a real connection that we can develop with people and if I can use that to help them better their lives, I’m going to do so! I have the opportunity to help people in more ways than one. How did you acquire the business acumen to be a successful influencer/ entrepreneur? It was completely by accident! #mademaven I made a YouTube channel as a means for self expression while in college and I kind of just fell into it as a job once it started to grow. As social media has changed over the years, I’ve been offered more opportunities to make this a career, but I had to consciously decide to make it into a business. Through YouTube I was able to learn a lot about monetization, appealing to my audience and demographics. Luckily, in the past I had experience with running my own photography and makeup artistry business, so I had a very basic understanding of how to work with clients and put a price on myself, but it wasn’t until recently that I sought out professional help on how to manage my money and market myself. It’s just a matter being self sufficient, willing to learn, and knowing your value! I’m still learning as I go! How do you handle the pressure that comes with your platform, especially being a Christian? It gets tough because the pressure I experience 63
