From the Executive Director
It Starts With One
We all know that old adage. Every journey begins with a single step. That is why it is an
adage, because it is a universally useful morsel of advice passed from one generation to the
next reminding us to stay focused and not become overwhelmed.
It is easy to become overwhelmed with the level of need we face in our communities.
For those of us who have dedicated ourselves to improving the lives of persons with
developmental disabilities, we have to remember that it starts with one. One child. One
client. One life improved at a time.
And as an organization, we must stay true to the same principle. We started over 30 years
ago with one meeting. One county at a time. We had to learn to speak with one voice,
to address one policy at a time, to educate one legislator at a time. And by learning to
do those things well, our impact has been so much greater than anything we could have
achieved as individuals.
It starts with one. One success at a time allows us to build a movement. And when the
times are more challenging, we can draw strength from looking back at each one of those
successes and remind ourselves to take one challenge at a time.
