Besides our unobstructed view of Petit Piton, we were wed to our spot because we played “the audience” to several couples who were married on the beach just in front of us. We shed more than a few tears as we listened to John Legend’s “All of Me” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Hawaii’s Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, while deep-pink flower petals were sprinkled in the bride’s path to the waterside canopy where the ceremony would take place. For the most part, these were small, destination weddings – sometimes only a bride and a groom were present – with the hotel staff acting as attendants. The common thread that united each of these unions was the Petit Piton backdrop and the famously gorgeous Caribbean sunsets, with the balmy evening breeze drawing the curtain between day and night. When we weren’t in our spot, we engaged in two rounds of snorkeling in clear water. Not quite novices at snorkeling, we nevertheless took our directions from the boatman – the primary guidance being to keep one’s distance from the delicate coral. Down under, we were treated to schools of deep purple and 183 bright yellow fish, brain coral and some larger fish. The current wasn’t rough, so that helped make for a great experience. Come the late afternoon, we made dinner plans for singularly magnificent cuisine. Our favorite at the Halcyon was the Soy Sushi Bar – for the freshest sushi anywhere – and we live within 60 miles of New York City, which boasts some of the best sushi bars - then Mario’s for terrific Italian fare, followed by a supremely delicious French meal at La Toc at the Sandals Regency La Toc.
