The hotel has a wide range of excursions that attracts both novice
campers and thrill-seeking travelers. With options like fossil viewing,
ATV rentals, 10 – 12-day treks, and spending a night with a nomad
family; guests at Auberge Du Sud can customize their own Moroccan
adventure that best suits their comfort level.
After a long trek and steamy shower, dinner is served in the center of
the campground. Layered over the sandy floor is a second floor made
from vibrant carpets of oranges and blues which match the carpets on
the walls of our room. Once dinnertime is over and without warning
the lamp lights go off. We are swallowed by a darkness so thick it
instantly reminds you that you are in the middle of nowhere. It was
easy to forget with all of the comforts and luxuries how isolated we
really were. There was an instant silence, then – as if on cue – a loud
gasp was released by the entire group. A moment after the artificial
lights had shut, the ink black sky was lit full of stars. I don’t mean one
or two, not even 100, but thousands of bright stars dancing above
us – the Milky Way so clear I thought I could reach up and grab it.
Shooting stars raced across the sky 2, sometimes 3 at a time.
That night I saw my first shooting star. It wasn’t captured in a selfie or
posted to Instagram, rather, it’s a new memory, created in a modern
setting, inspired by an old-fashioned way.
