META'S LEGACY Meta Malzacher was 101 when she first learned Camp Lutherhaven needed a new dining hall, so she put a $150,000 “Challenge Bequest” in her will to positively encourage others to give to the half-million dollar long-awaited renovation. “But you don’t get it until I die,” she reminded us with a twinkle in her eye. Meta Carstens Malzacher was born in the summer of 1900 in Reardan, Washington. She graduated from Reardan High and Washington State College in Pullman. Headlining in the November 1, 1920 edition of The Evergreen, the college’s daily newspaper, was the Cougar’s “whitewash” of Montana, 31-0, and the election of Warren G. Harding as US President. In the want ads there’s a gramophone and “good hard cider” for sale. There’s also a small line in the Society section under Kappa Alpha Theta sorority: Meta Carstens weekending at her Reardan home. Meta loved English and history, teaching high school in Winthrop, WA. She had a keen business sense, too, serving as superintendent of Okanogan School District. Meta loved music and played piano and organ at church; (when she eventually settled in Spokane she was a member at Christ Lutheran.) Her late husband, John, played violin, and among their kids’ favorite memories was listening to their parent’s piano/ violin duets. Margaret N. Johnson Virginia E. In fact, in her later years, when her care facility first got computers, Meta was – no surprise – the first to sign up for lessons. With Meta’s $150,000 expectancy for the future dining hall not exactly “in hand,” but pledged, Lutherhaven went to the M.J. Murdock Trust in Vancouver, WA, and asked them to match it. They did! From there, fund-raising steam-rolled, and the project Meta launched was underway. Did we mention Meta loved life? By the time she went to be with Jesus in the summer of 2003, at 103 ½, the new Lutherhaven Dining Hall her generosity triggered was already in use! And she wasn’t done. We’re not certain, but we think there was more to that twinkle in Meta’s eye than people maybe knew. A year after she passed away, we got word of a Charitable Remainder Trust she’d set up with the InFaith Community Foundation of Minneapolis. The trust will send Lutherhaven a check every year for, at Meta’s request, “upkeep and new building projects.” And as it’s invested, Meta’s trust in and for Lutherhaven will continue to grow … forever. Well done, good and faithful servant! Thanks for investing in kids! The other 80% is invested in perpetuity forever! Each year the ministry may designate 4% of the Endowment Fund for special projects, leaving the rest to grow. Our goal: A $10 million Endowment — contributing $400,000 each year for special endeavors.
