EVERY CHILD SUCCEEDS — NEW ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES
LUSD is continuously seeking ways to expand learning opportunities for all students to support a rich and success-filled learning experience . This is the second year that the district has implemented new and exciting programs . These programs seek to support students by building on the effective daily classroom instruction .
Enriching Student Learning through Arts Education
LUSD students are amongst the brightest and artistically talented in the Central Valley . To develop students ’ artistic abilities , the District has taken action to consistently offer arts education in the classroom . Through a partnership with ― The Muse ‖ all TK-5 students receive art lessons in painting , drawing , ceramics and printmaking activities with an arts-trained teacher . These lessons provide students a learning experience that develops critical thinkers while being engaged in creative art activities . In addition , many outstanding LUSD teachers integrate art activities with classroom projects and instruction .
S . T . R . E . A . M Summer Academy
The S . T . R . E . A . M Summer Academy is once again being offered to students in the district . The academy offers high interest , project-based learning experience . The TK – 6th grade intervention program is a twenty-day summer institute that focuses on grade level thematic , project – based study of Science , Technology , Reading , Engineering , Art , and Math . The student-to-teacher ratio is maintained at 20 students to 1 teacher . Students are invited to enroll based on their most recent reading / literacy scores ; TK selection is based on teacher recommendation . The summer program for grades 7 and 8 differs in that it provides students a unit recovery opportunity to meet their graduation unit requirement .
Academic Intervention / Support
Each school offers the services of two clinicians who provide intervention and enrichment instructional support . The clinicians provide services to students who are struggling with reading and / or mathematics both during and after school . The majority of students working with the clinicians are English language learners who are new to the district or who have been struggling with English language acquisition .
Summer DLA Academy ( Grades 7-8 )
Incoming 7th & 8th grade DLA students will now have the option of completing the program ’ s requirement over the summer . The summer alternative will consist of 20 days plus three Saturday sessions during the school year . Students who take advantage of this option , will have the opportunity to take other electives during the regular school year . The Program will continue to be offered during the year as well .
