Livingston is Developing Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds

El Distrito esta Desarrollando Cuerpos Sanos y Mentes Sanas

Livingston Schools are working to become a model in providing students healthy and tasty meals ! The district ’ s mission and passion is to provide healthy food to students throughout the school day . Providing whole grains , low fat , fresh fruits and vegetables , reduced sodium and lower saturated fat are all a part of the focus to bring healthier food choices to the schools ’ food services program . In collaboration with the district nurse , Lori Morgan , nutritional and calorie information is scrutinized and used to inform healthy menu planning . Taste testing new recipes with students for real-time feedback , establishment of a Student Nutrition Advisory council , addition of a food court for grades 6-8 , and collaboration with principals to help staff switch to healthier classroom party snacks are programs rolled out by the new healthy food initiative . Breakfast , lunch , dinners , snacks , and classroom treats are all being redesigned to better meet the nutritional needs of the growing child .
The opportunities for students to have a meal at school have expanded considerably . In addition to the traditional breakfast and lunch programs , a morning healthy snack , breakfast served at recess at two sites , and an after school meal is now being offered . At each site students are offered a choice of 5 or more fruits and vegetables at the delicious “ Garden Salad Bar ” and a vegetarian option is available every day . LUSD is proud to offer healthy free meals to all students . For more information about the district ’ s nutrition program , please contact program director , Laura Howe at ( 209 ) 394-5457 .
Elementary Physical Education Physical activity is also key to having a healthy body and mind . Physical Education Teacher , William Ray , joined LUSD in 2015-2016 , as the district ’ s elementary PE teacher . In addition to the physical education students receive with their regular classroom teacher , Coach Ray rotates through each elementary school providing physical fitness activities to all students in grades TK — 5th .
