L U R E
together for an evening session
in their home town.
If these boys pray to the gods of
lures then we met up with them
at what has to be their temple.
Chesil Bait ‘n’ Tackle is a focal
point for the local lure scene
and after catching up with the
Weymouth LRF crew there –
and parting with some cash for
a few new bits from the shop’s
incredibly well-stocked range –
we then headed on to our first
port of call for the session.
The pleasure pier at Weyouth is
one of two man-made structures
that shoot out parallel from
the land creating a bottleneck
entrance to a large quay.
Dating back some 200 years,
the structure is a Mecca for
fish seeking shelter and food
in and around its iron, wood
and concrete underpinnings.
In short, the perfect place to
practise the art of LRF.
Shaun Carrington, Luke Gregory
and Mike Morris are all ready
for action. Armed with delicate
tackle designed not just to
catch fish, but deliver the right
balance to allow enjoyment from
even the smallest of captures
they set to work.
By the very nature of LRF the
guys are carrying little in the
way of kit – rod, reel and a small
bag for the rest. Not only does
this make the fishing mobile,
but it also helps to access areas
where the fish are more likely to
be hiding. Leaving Shaun and
Mike on the well trodden boards
top side of the pier, we follow
Luke below.
In the darkened shade on the
pier’s structure an army of
angry looking cross-members
and diagonal stanchions create
a industrial lattice worn by
time and salt water. Luke leaps
surefooted across the terrain,
