But when this was burned down during the moro raid in 1616 , the Jesuits transferred their mission center and residencia to Katbalaugan , the ancient name of Catbalogan . From that residencia , they established mission sites or visitas in the villages of Cotay , Cawayan ( forerunner of Zumarraga ), Canahawan ( Canhawan , still a barangay of Catbalogan ), out of which a pueblo was created . Because it was the Jesuit residencia , the political officialdom thought it convenient to make it into the cabecera or capital of the island province of Samar . 7
