area where I had no shot because of the bush.
Most whitetail hunters would never realize
how naked you are at 60 yards from an animal
without the canola to use for cover. I quickly
realized this might be one of those hunts where I
would return home with tags in my pocket.
After about 5 days stalking mule deer and
probably putting a little too much pressure on
them, we decided to hunt
black bear
in the evenings. Again,
this was originally
planned as a spot and
stalk hunt in wheat
fields. Although most
of them were already
harvested,
there
were a few that still
had standing wheat
so we would glass.
We found some
signs of bear, but
did not see any.
Our
next
option was to
sit in stand with
a bait station
which is what
we did for the
next four nights. We did see bear
every night, but they were not the shooters I was
looking for.
Most of the bear we had been seeing were
moving just before dark. On the 4th night,
we were in stand for about 15 minutes. My
cameraman was shooting scenery and close
ups. I’m looking off to the side of the
