SKIBOA No-one expected that the beautiful weather of previous weeks would turn so suddenly, with gale-force winds and rain threatening to scupper this popular competition. Not unexpected, was the fact that 604 die-hard anglers ignored awful conditions, to catch 73 fish overall, totalling 827.50kg. AL 2019 Even though the sun was out, and it was quite hot early on Day 1 (Saturday), a bad south wester and huge swells predicted for late morning, convinced the organisers to cancel – in the interests of safety. By Easter Sunday (now Day 1), the rain had settled in, but the determined competitors went for it anyway and managed to catch 47 fish in total. JJ van Rensburg’s 22.54kg Couta headed the leader board, followed by Sean Keyter 2nd (21.40kg) and Jonathan Bakos in third place with 20.74kg. There was a very festive atmosphere at Durban Skiboat Club late that afternoon, as anglers and their families enjoyed socialising together in the big marquee. Many of them stayed on into the evening for the entertainment provided by well-known musician Bok van Blerk. His foot-tapping songs soon had the crowd on their feet and dancing the night away! Anglers fishing on Monday (now Day 2), had short -time to catch the “big one” as lines-up and weigh-in was brought forward to 12noon. Prize-giving took place at 3pm by which time it was bucketing down.
