Bossie said, “It’s a challenging sport, but anglers love it as it familiarises
them with their gear and improves their ability to cast greater distances.
Distances of over 200m are cast easily which puts the angler at an
advantage when it comes to the difficult-to-reach spots when fishing.

In casting for distance, the anglers are given six casts per weight and
the best distance of each weight category is added up to give the total
distance cast. There is an individual winner per weight category and an
overall winner for the best total distance. In the team results, the best
three of the four team members distances are taken into consideration
for the total metres.
It rained throughout this four-day competition which was very
challenging. The spool of the reel needs to be secured by the thumb
and a piece of bicycle tubing, a “thumbie”, is used over the thumb
to ensure a secure and firm hold on the line when casting. In wet
conditions thumb slip is a big risk and can result in a crack off.
Despite the bad conditions, four World records were broken during
these World Championships. Italy’s Fillipo Montepagano broke two
world records - casting 281.19m with a 150g weight and 280.69m with
the 125g. Reigning World Champion Salvador Bustos from Argentina,
took gold with a new world record of 269.68m with a 100g weight. In
the Ladies – Teresa Torres from Paraguay cast a new world record of
174.97m with a 125g weight.
