LONG CASTING OF SEA WEIGHTS (February 10th – 14th: incl one training day This interesting World Games event involves no water at all! Instead anglers compete by casting on an open field (the driving range for fishermen), which has to be 400m x 400m to avoid the danger of causing injury or damage to property! 37 Men and two Ladies from nine countries competed in this event, which took place on a field near Pretoria. They were accommodated at Sierra Burgers Park Hotel in the city. Organiser Bossie van Rensburg gave us the rundown. Casting takes place within a 30-degree sector and involves a lot of skill and special techniques. Anglers cast from a base (they may not step over the base board), using any rod with a centre pin reel or a coffee grinder. There are four weight classes – 100g for .25mm line, 125g for .28mm line, 150g for .31mm line and 175g for .35mm line. The Shock Leader is .65mm on the lighter two weights and .75mm on the two heavier weights. The Ladies only cast the 100g and 125g weights. The supplied weights are accurately weighed and a Distomat laser measuring instrument is used to measure the distance cast, with an accuracy of three decimals of a cm! The court is set up with the wind at the casters’ backs and if the wind changes, the court can be moved, after a round of casting is completed. slide
