It was a perfect weekend after nearly a month of unpredictable weather, ranging from cold to gale force winds – and the 341 anglers and their supporters, looked forward to quality time in the sun. Of course, they also had an eye on the boat- load of prizes to be won – including those donated by Lowrance SA and most exciting of all, a tagged fish that was insured for R50 000! Families were in high spirits as they pitched tents and manoeuvred their caravans onto the huge expanse of lawn near the water’s edge. Taking careful note of the food stalls for those ‘essential’ pancakes, breakfast rolls and more... they also gave the nod to the giant screen, which had been erected for the all-important rugby game (SA vs Wales), and the braai planned for that evening. Delighted children spilled out in all directions - enjoying the space, the freedom to run wild and popping into the water to cool off. Even more delighted parents relaxed - knowing they were safe… and would soon be exhausted! All-in-all everyone enjoyed the “real carnival atmosphere” - with a twist… it was a fishing competition after all! Dads and daughters, mums and sons, individuals and teams all took to the water in virtually anything that floated – from canoes, to kickboats, skiboats to sophisticated bass boats and even a huge wakeboarding boat. There were 43 boats in total – quite a crowd for this modest expanse of water.
