In all of his endeavors, Dr. van Berkel
seems to have an edge of optimism in
his voice. Whether it’s growing a surgical
transplant department, traveling to the
Galapagos Islands with his family, building
an entirely new business out of a research
model, or simply working on Lego sets with
his son, his excitement is contagious. “I have
a cool job,” he smiled. “There are days I can’t
believe I get paid to do what I do. That’s why
it’s easy for me to teach medical students.
