REVIEW away from desperation and madness. Gonzales has learned from other survivors that their success is often very closely related to a persistent appreciation for any beauty they can see in their current situation. Simultaneously coupled is usually a goal kept in mind for their return (e.g. greeting or comforting a spouse or child). The grateful perspective being less obvious, he exemplifies this as a constant admiration for the beauty of the environment, and a focus on what is going right. “The sun beams are always there. The trick is in seeing them.” – Laurence Gonzales. As a doctor, I find this both captivating and revealing. The paradigm of the survivor mentality parallels the stout heart of our dear patients we have fought for, and rejoiced with when they have pulled through. Not always is the culprit of destruction a wrecked airplane or a ghastly mountain storm; sometimes it is the much more tangible car accident, or cancer—often equally as unexpected. The approach of the survivors, however, seems to be consistent. Dr. Ferguson is a PGY3 Emergency Medicine Resident at the University of Louisville Hospital. A survivor of 53 days at sea described it as thus: “I am con- stantly surrounded by a display of natural wonders… It is beauty surrounded by ugly fear. I write in my log that it’s a view of heaven from a seat in hell.” HOW OLD IS YOUR ROSTER PHOTO?
