ON THE COVER MEDICAL STUDENTS WIN THE DAY at GLMS Foundation Golf Tournament Aaron Burch I t was a hot but beautiful day at the Hurstbourne Country Club on September 25, where the GLMS Foundation Scholarship Golf Tournament was in full swing. Seventy physicians and sponsors played a shamble style tournament to benefit medical students, and this year seven physicians-in-the-making were awarded $5,000 scholarships as a celebration of their hard work, to help them realize the opportunities before them. This year, $30,000 in scholarships was awarded to six promising young med- ical students through the GLMS Foundation and another $5,000 scholarship was awarded by the GLMS Alliance. The total amount awarded over seven years has now risen to $173,000. Thank you to the physicians, health care organizations and local businesses that have made these scholarships possible, as well as everyone who participated in the GLMS Foundation’s silent auction and raffle, which raised thousands of dollars for next year’s awards. The 2017 medical student scholarship recipients were Kevin Connolly, Molly Flottman, Andrea Hiller, Bailey Nelson, Andrew Swiergosz, Taylor Hodge and Carli Whittington. Presenting the awards was GLMS Foundation Scholarship Committee Chair Linda Gleis, MD, with introductions from Golf Event Chair Dr. David Watkins and Robert Hecht. The $5,000 Alliance Scholarship was presented by Millicent Evans and Dr. Monica Ann Shaw. The all-tourney sponsor was Stock Yards Bank & Trust. In the golf outing, teams followed a shamble format for the competition, in which all team members tee off and then play out the hole at stroke play from the location of the best-placed ball. The championship team was sponsored by Stock Yards Bank & Trust and included Rick Tobe, Tony Simms, Davis Boland and David Clayton. Second place went to the team of Dr. Mark Ihnen, Dr. Jeremy Clark, Dr. Chris Compton and Bob Penny. The third-place team included Michael Rabkin, Jay Hedges, Joe Zabratanski and Ron Patberg. The annual “Worst Putter Award” – sponsored by Mary G. Barry, MD, in memory of her father, journalist Mike Barry – was awarded to Dr. Chris Compton. The 8 th annual golf outing will take place Monday, September 24 th , 2018. Be on the lookout for more information for next year’s event in the months ahead!
