(continued from page 15) REFLECTIONS ON NICARAGUA Manuel Grimaldi, MD F rom the beginning of this decade I have been very fortunate to be a participant in the annual January Managua Mission organized to serve children and families of the Pathway to Change program under the auspices of Hand in Hand and the GLMS Foundation. (continued on page 16) While the first experience was what I would call “social tourism,” the exposure to the noble Nicaraguan people changed my outlook and gave me the gift of service and the realization that my life is not about myself. Since that fateful occasion in 2010, I have been following this call and have worked with amazing people from there and here who labor to do good for the sake of others. These immersion trips have allowed me to meet and nurture new friendships and, by the examples of so many unsung heroes, develop a broader sense of service in our own community. Manuel Grimaldi, MD, is a retired oncologist. JULY 2016 17
