60 YEARS of the GLMS Foundation O n November 29, 2018, the Greater Louisville Medical Society Foundation celebrated 60 years of excellence in community service by hosting a sold-out event at the lavish 21c Hotel. Sponsored by GLMS, Humana and Casey Wealth Consultants, the night honored those who made the Foundation what it is today while acknowledging there were many endeavors still to come. Surrounded by evocative art exhibits, more than 120 guests attended the GLMS Foundation’s signature night, which recognized not only the Foundation but several leading physicians and orga- nizations in the community. Dr. Salvatore Bertolone received the Foundation’s Medical Ed- ucation Award for his years of excellent service in hematology/ oncology as well as his founding of Louisville’s Ronald McDonald House, and his work as Hospice of Louisville Board Chair. The Healing Place Recovery Program was honored with the Foundation’s Community Partner Award. Since their founding in 1989, thousands of men and women have walked through their doors seeking help. Their service continues to blossom as The Healing Place has become a pillar within the Louisville community. Last but not least, Humana honored Dr. Wayne Tuckson with the “Partner in Community Health Excellence Award.” Dr. Tuckson was visibly surprised during his acceptance speech, thanking Humana and encouraging all in attendance to reach into the community and do more. The GLMS Foundation has evolved significantly in the time since its founding in 1958. Its stature in the community, as well as the number of people positively affected by its presence, has grown. With the sale of the Old Medical School Building in 2017, the Foundation found itself able to take on new responsibilities and endeavors. Among these is a new and extended partnership with GLMS to provide medical education to the public. Attendees at the 21c event were treated to an example of that partnership via the online video series “GLMS Doctalks: Medical Education for Patients.” The newest episode, discussing vaccinations with Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness Medical Director Dr. Lori Caloia, is the latest example of what will continue to be a long and rewarding relationship. The GLMS Foundation continues to support the commu- nity through medical scholarships and partnerships with oth- er charitable organizations. There are numerous ways to get involved, through donations or volunteering. To learn more, please contact GLMS Foundation Director Ashley Cassetty at [email protected].
