FASHION EXTRVAGANZA
interview with NINA MASIC-LIZDEK
What made you want to become a photographer?
Well somehow I always knew that I’ll end up
doing something creative, it’s just that I had
to go through some experimentation phase to
find out what it is exactly. As a toddler I was
always looking to “beautify” people in newspapers by giving them whole makeup treatment with glitter and changing their haircuts.
After that I had a phase where I’ve dedicated
myself to doing hairstyles, and my mom
was convinced that I’ll eventually become a
hairdresser :D I also had a phase of drawing
fashion pieces and thought that I’ll become a
fashion designer. Then, as a teenager I started
drawing portraits and that’s when I have
decided that I’ll go to academy, but I still
didn’t know what major to choose because I
wanted to do more than just drawing. Then,
I found out the graphic design and realised
that I’ve just found something that makes
me feel creatively fulfilled and in the end got
enrolled in graphic design major at Academy
of fine arts in Sarajevo. At that time I finally
started discovering photography, but I must
admit I thought it was just going to be another
hobby… but it didn’t. It took me four years of
college and a BA degree in graphic design to
finally admit to myself that photography was
the only one of those creative phases that was
more than just that.

My name is Mykie and I’m a selftaught beauty and special effects
makeup artist from Philadelphia. Although I’m self-taught, my education
at Temple University’s film school
and my employment at MAC Cosmetics and Terror Behind the Walls have
really shaped me as an artist. After
surrounding myself with film, beauty,
and special effects in my college
years, I decided it was time to move to
Los Angeles and pursue a career in all
three areas.
Since moving to LA, I have worked
on several feature films, short films,
music videos and other events- but
the real game changer came when I
started posting my makeup work to
social media platforms. What started
as a challenge to myself, to post a different makeup look for 100 consecutive days, turned into a whole other
career opportunity that I hardly knew
existed. Now Iany formal training in this and if

What do you focus on mostly?
Definitely fashion and beauty photography. But it still might not be that obvious
yet, because, as I’ve mentioned, until two
years ago photography was still some
media with which I’ve experimented with
all different genres, until I realised in the
end that I’m definitely leaning towards
fashion photography. With it I grew affection towards post-production so I’ve
concentrated on that also… I believe it has
something to do with beautifying all those
people in the newspaper when I was a kid.
